SGW Designworks Receives 2021 GOOD DESIGN Award

By SGW Team

Since 1950, many of the world’s most well-designed products have been recognized by the GOOD DESIGN® Awards. This is the world’s oldest design awards program — described as “the most sought-after international seal of outstanding design quality.” GOOD DESIGN marks its 71st year in 2021, and, for the second consecutive year, we are pleased to announce that a product designed by SGW Designworks has received this prestigious award.

The 2021 Good Design Award Goes To…

Meet the Swoopy 3C Rugged, designed for our sister company Portsmith, which won the Good Design Award in the program’s Electronics category. The product is an ultra-rugged USB-C-to-Ethernet adapter designed for multiple applications — from military to enterprise. It is used to provide fast data connectivity between two pieces of hardware when security needs or conditions make wireless connections impossible. It functions flawlessly on-base or in the office — even when beaten, battered, and neglected.

In 2021, thousands of designers and visionary companies from 55+ countries entered the Good Design competition, but only 1,100 products —including the Swoopy 3C Rugged — were selected and awarded in categories that include new electronics, robotics and bionics, household products, medical equipment, and transportation, among others.

After intensive evaluation, the jury selected winners “based on the design quality of the products and graphics true to the historic motto ‘In search of GOOD DESIGN.’ According to the 2021 Good Design press release, “Only the best of the best designs received an award.”

The “Powerful Force” of Good Design

“Our team is very proud to receive a Good Design Award for the second year in a row. The fact that this time we’ve been recognized for a product that our sister company will manufacture and sell makes it even more rewarding,” says Ryan Gray, SGW Designworks CEO. “The Swoopy 3C Rugged is a unique product, with a level of durability never before seen in this type of hardware. That is what makes it the best-of-the-best.”

“Good Design defines the way we approach designing objects and places across the globe – keeping consumers’ needs central to the mission and aspirations of designers and manufacturers to ‘Shape Living for a Better Future’,” says Christian Narkiewicz-Laine, architecture critic and the Museum’s chief curator of Good Design. “This philosophy recognizes and values the impact design has in people’s lives, understanding that design is not just about the object created, but also about the experience and how it makes us feel, think, and learn.”

Since 2008, SGW Designworks has embodied this philosophy, striving since our early beginnings to develop products that improve human existence. As Narkiewicz-Laine says, “Good Design is one of the most powerful forces in our lives.” We couldn’t agree more. In fact, we believe that good design truly can change the world.

A hearty congratulations to the team at SGW Designworks for their hard work on this project and to Portsmith for their continued vision. From all of us — thank you, Good Design!
