SGW Designworks completed the preliminary design of Cradlepoint’s outdoor vehicle router, with eventual hand-off to the original design manufacturer (ODM).

Challenge

Product Vision

SGW would need to engineer a durable product that integrated the necessary electronics and provided the necessary aesthetic to meet user expectations.

This project would require UI, housing, and system integration. To integrate electronics into the outdoor device, SGW would need to take into account enclosure and industrial design considerations, while collaborating with the client.

Cradlepoint’s original concept required some modifications to align the router’s exterior aesthetic with the component layout. Its unique shape required a customized PCB as well as clever wire routing, and the device would also need a weather-proof door that would provide access to the SIM card.

Since Cradlepoint had worked with SGW Designworks on other enclosure design and engineering projects, they felt confident engaging in this effort.

Final Outcome

Within a few months, SGW Designworks integrated the modem, antennas, and router into a single aerodynamic, ruggedized casing.

This simplified form factor reduces installation complexity and cost, and incorporates a power cable or Power over Ethernet (PoE) with no coax cables. The router’s rubber seal ensures a watertight seal that protects internal components, even on vehicles with curved roofs.

Within just a few months, Cradlepoint successfully launched the R2100 Series 5G Ruggedized Router. This integrated modem, antenna, and Wi-Fi 6-equipped router can be deployed in one complete package — by being installed as a self-contained 5G router or supplementing an existing router as a 5G adapter.

Its continual release of innovative new products earned Cradlepoint recognition as the Innovative Company of the Year at the 2019 Idaho Innovation Awards.
